Sheilalyn Goto

Sheilalyn Midori Goto, 42, of Keopu, died Feb. 9 at Kona Community Hospital. Born Feb. 12, 1969, in Kealakekua, she was a self-employed florist and owner of Sheila’s Flowers and member of the Kona Koyasan Daishiji Shigon.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Feb. 18 at the Holualoa School cafeteria in Holualoa for a 10 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

She is survived by companion, Issac Kaiawe, of Keopu; son, Austin (Tiarrha Valera) Komo, of Keopu; hanai daughter, Kauhiwai Goto, of Waimea; mother, Judy Goto, of Waimea; sisters, Lianne Goto, of Honolulu; Heather Goto, of Waimea; grandmother, Hiroko Komo, of Keopu; a granddaughter; an uncle; two aunts; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Yaeko Kaneko

Yaeko Kaneko, 80, of Kealakekua, died Feb. 9 at Kona Community Hospital. Born June 16, 1931, in Glenwood, she was a public school teacher and member of Kona Honwanji Mission, Bank Kumiai, Yano Hall Senior Citizens, Hawaii State Teachers Association Union, Hawaii Education Association, Fukuoka Kenjin Kai, Teachers Mixed Bowling League and Park and Recreation Seniors Bowling League.

Friends may call at 3 p.m. Feb. 18 at Kona Hongwanji Mission in Kealakekua for a 4 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and flowers omitted.

She is survived by husband, Mike Kaneko, of Kealakekua; daughters, Leanne (Dennis) Amano, of Yorba Linda, Calif., Kristine (David Bixler) Kaneko, of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; brothers, Hiroshi Nozawa, of Glenwood, Toshiaki (Alice) Nozawa, of Fullerton, Calif., Hideo Nozawa, of Honolulu; sister, Haruko (Tatsuo) Matsuzaki, of Hilo; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert Koanui

Robert “Bobby” Kamamo Koanui, 59, of Kailua-Kona, died Feb. 3 at Kona Community Hospital. Born June 18, 1952, in Honolulu, he was a musician for Uncle George Naope for many years, leader of Aloha In Motion Trio and the house band for the county kupuna festival and an honorary member of Da Hui.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Feb. 18 at Solid Rock Ministries, 75-5660 A1 Kopiko St. in the Kopiko Plaza next to Longs Drugs in Kailua-Kona. A celebration of life will follow at Old Kona Airport Park pavilion No. 4. Family requests casual attire be worn.

Sharon Kuahuia

Sharon Piimoku Kuahuia, 66, of Milolii, died Feb. 2 at The Queen’s Medical Center. Born Dec. 27, 1945, on Molokai, she was a commercial fisherman and choreworker with the County of Hawaii.

Margaret Miyose

Margaret Reiko Miyose, 79, of Hilo, died Jan. 25 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born June 3, 1932, in Keaau, she was a former employee of the old Keaau Store, Uyeda Dental Lab and Ah Mai Store, member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Kyodan and Anela Street Kumiai.

Barbara Kuluwaimaka

Barbara May Kuluwaimaka, 39, of Pahoa, died Feb. 2 at Kona Community Hospital. Born May 14, 1972, in Kapaau, she was a maintenance supervisor and member of ARC of Kona.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Feb. 20 at Old Kona Airport Park beach pavilion No. 3 for a celebration of life. A potluck luncheon will follow.

Motoyoshi Tanaka

Motoyoshi “Moto” Tanaka, 93, of Hilo, died Feb. 8 at Hilo Medical Center. Born April 4, 1918, in Hilo, he was retired from The Gas Co., a World War II Army veteran and member of Company D 100th Infantry Battalion, Hilo Meishoin, Maikai Kumiai, Big Island Karaoke and Fukuoka Kenjin Kai.

Albert Prudencio

Albert “Uncle Sonny” I. Prudencio, 82, of Antioch, Calif., formerly of Hilo, died Feb. 7 at his residence. Born in Hilo, he was a retired employee for the Golden Gate Magazine Co. in San Francisco.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial follows at Homelani Memorial Park. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by sisters, Adelaide (Lloyd) Irwin, of San Antonia, Florence Prudencio, of Waipahu, Oahu, Mildred Lucas and Isabel Sampaia, both of Hilo; brother, William Prudencio, of Hilo; caregivers, Jose and Zoila Salazar, of Antioch, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Norman Moen

Norman “Bud” Richard Moen, 88, of Kailua-Kona, died Jan. 29 at his residence. Born March 16, 1923, in Hillsboro, N.D., he was owner of the former Viking Bags & Baggage, served as head volunteer for Destination Kona Coast’s Aloha Volunteers committee, a former weigh master and commissioner for Hawaii International Billfish Tournament, retired sales promotion manager for Lennox Industries in Marshalltown, Iowa, member of Christ Church Episcopal and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a bomber pilot and flight instructor.

Lyons Alapai Kahulamu, 33, of Kailua-Kona, died Jan. 23 at Kona Community Hospital. Born July 9, 1978, in Kealakekua, he was a mechanic for Kona Kwik Lube.

Thomas Calabrese

Thomas John Calabrese, 74, of Hilo, died Feb. 7 at his residence. Born Oct. 28, 1939, in Pittson, Pa., he was an engineer for the federal government, member of the Kona Yacht Club and the Bowfin Club, a certified master gardener and Navy veteran.

Private services were held.

He is survived by spouse, Sharon Calabrese, of Hilo; sons, Thomas Calabrese, of Portland, Ore., Michael (Candy) Calabrese, of Honolulu, Nicholas (Kristy) Calabrese, of Westbrook, Conn., Stephen Nishimoto, of Tokyo, Harry (Laurisa) Nishimoto, of Hilo; daughter, Jan (Bruce) Arita, of Hilo; brothers, Charlie Calabrese, of Arizona, John (Martha) Calabrese and Anthony Calabrese, both of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild.


Cody Hewitt

Cody Colleen Hewitt, 42, of Hawaiian Acres, died Feb. 11 at her residence. Born July 2, 1969, in Rawlins, Wyo., she was the proprietor of The Coffee Caboose and member of the Alaska Civil Air Patrol.

Private services are planned.

She is survived by daughter, Rachael Hewitt, of North Pole, Alaska; parents, Robert and Andrea Makinen, of Hawaiian Acres; brother, Robert (Jacqueline) Makinen, of North Pole, Alaska; several nieces and nephews.


William Mallion

William “Bill” Caleb Clive Mallion, 86, of Kailua-Kona, died Feb. 5 at his residence. Born Feb. 4, 1926, in Toronto, he was a retired civil draftsman and member of Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, Kona Masonic Lodge, Kona Elks Lodge, Aloha Shriners and Kona Shrine Club.

Services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by wife, Jean Mallion, of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Janis Walholm, of Honokaa, Victoria (Bob Seifert) Mallion, of Kukuihaele; sister, June (Ken) Reimer, of Ontario, Canada; a granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.

Howard Martin

Howard “Howie” Lawrence Martin, 75, of Pahoa, died Jan. 28 at his home. Born May 23, 1936, in Pittsburgh, he was an entrepreneur, founder of Zocalo Inc., Air Force veteran and alumni of Texas A&M University.

He is survived by sons, Scott Martin, of Thailand, J. Martin, of Maui, Bradley (Yoko) Hashimoto-Martin, of Pahoa; daughter, Kayden Rodhe, of Maui; grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
